중국 시진핑 정부가 종교에 대한 탄압 수위를 강화하고 있는 가운데, 당국의 탄압은 유교, 불교와 더불어 중국 전통 ‘3대 종교’로 자리잡고 있는 도교의 근간에도 직접적인 영향을 미치고 있다.

‘종교 활동 장소 등록증을 소지하지 않았다’는 이유로 폐쇄된 가정 교회의 교인들이 장소를 임대하려고 노력하고 있지만, 여전히 탄압에 시달리고 있다.

중국 공무원들이 철거 캠페인을 감행하자, 사찰로부터 내몰린 많은 불교 신자들은 궁핍한 극빈자로 전락했다.
